Autographed ‘A Game of Thrones’ coins flown to near-space!
Springdale, AR:
Fantasy met reality when a team of high school students from Bishop CA recently launched a handful of coins from George R.R. Martin’s A GAME OF THRONES™ fantasy series to the upper stratosphere. Shire Post Mint, the maker of Martin’s Iron Coin of the Faceless Man™, sponsored the February 2015 cosmic-ray research balloon flight. The Earth to Sky Calculus group offers to carry small payloads to mission sponsors, and Shire Post elected to send up ten serial numbered Faceless Man coins. The coins reached an altitude of 112,000 feet and were recovered in the desert after a rough re-entry. They have been encased in a sealed plastic slab with a card signed by George R.R. Martin, and housed in a DVD-size slip-case, with a 16 page mission folder, a fragment of the actual balloon, and a USB jump drive containing full video coverage of the mission and photos of the launch and recovery operations.
Just ten of these sets will ever be made, and serial #1 will go to Mr. Martin himself for his own personal collection. The other nine will go up for auction, one at a time, beginning 12:01 AM August 1 on eBay.
